Wounded man’s attacker soughtPolice are looking for a man in his early 20s who allegedly shot an older man last night near the Hawai'i Convention Center after an argument.
The trouble began about 11 p.m. when the two men and a woman were at the intersection of Atkinson Drive and Kona Street. After the men began to argue, the younger man allegedly used a handgun to shoot the 42-year-old victim in the abdomen, police said. The younger man then left in a white pickup truck.
The victim was taken in critical condition to The Queen’s Medical Center.
Big Island crash victim identified
Big Island police have identified the victim of a one-vehicle accident yesterday as Andrew Camacho, 25, of a Pa'auilo address.
Camacho died when his pickup truck ran off the road and into a gulch on Mamalahoa Highway about 12:20 a.m. yesterday, police said. It was the second traffic death on the Big Island this year,
Camacho’s truck was eastbound when it veered to the right of the highway and then back across both lanes before crashing through a guardrail and into the gulch, police said.
He was pronounced dead at 4:15 a.m. at Hilo Medical Center.
Police said speed was a factor in the crash. An autopsy will be done to determine the exact cause of death.
Vendor robbery suspect arrested
A 30-year-old man was arrested today in connection with a robbery and assault at a manapua wagon last spring, police said.
No charges have been filed, but the 30-year-old suspect remains under arrest at the police station cell block for investigation of second-degree robbery.
The suspect is alleged to have purchased food from the manapua wagon vendor on April 9, 2003.
He claimed to have paid for it with a $100 bill and got into an argument with the 41-year-old vendor. The suspect then entered the wagon, assaulted the vendor and left with the cash box, police said. Police knew his identity but they could not find him.
The transaction was recorded by a surveillance camera and police said there was no $100 bill used.
Police arrested the man Wednesday in connection with an unrelated robbery in Waikiki.
Caution urged after nene death
Biologists and rangers at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park are mourning the loss of a female nene that was hit and killed by a car Wednesday, and drivers in the area were reminded to use extra caution.
The nene was hit about 9 p.m. by a car on Highway 11 near the 40-mile marker in Ka'u. Her mate and 8-week-old gosling escaped harm but remain in the area.
Because nene mate for life, park biologist Kathleen Misajon expects the male and gosling will linger near where the death occurred for several days or weeks.
"The pair had been together for more than seven years and had successfully nested and raised goslings to fledge in years past," Misajon said. "Please take extra care when driving through this area and wherever nene crossing signs are posted."
