Mystery death findings awaited

The state Health Department expects test results as early as next week that may identify the illness suffered by a Hawai'i college student who died last month in Maryland after being hospitalized for flu-like symptoms.

Simon Hultman, 22, became sick late last month after a trip home to the Big Island for the holidays. Hultman, a senior in international studies at Washington College, went to an emergency room in Maryland complaining of a fever and died five days later.

His mother, Diane Hultman, said Maryland officials told her that a preliminary test indicatedt the illness may have been dengue hemorrhagic fever, a rare form of dengue fever. She also indicated that tests were being done to check for leptospirosis, a bacterial disease that can also cause fevers and, in rare cases, death.
