UAB rallies past UH in Paradise softball

Alabama-Birmingham scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Hawai'i, 4-3, in a Paradise Classic softball game last night at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

UAB is 1-0, Hawai'i 1-1.

The Rainbow Wahine broke a 2-all tie when Amanda Garza scored on a passed ball in the top of the sixth. UH was the visiting team for the game.

Beth Mullins drove in Chelsea McCall with a single to give UAB the 4-3 lead in bottom of the inning.

Tracie Uchima and Tyleen Tausaga each had two hits to account for all of the Rainbow Wahine's hits.

In other Paradise Classic games yesterday, Tennessee stopped St. Mary's, 8-0, on a no-hitter by Monica Abbott and Oregon State shut out Brigham Young 7-0.



BASKETBALL

• Chaminade beats HPU: Nick Frey scored 19 points as Chaminade rallied for a 76-72 Pacific West Conference basketball victory over Hawai'i Pacific at McCabe Gym, despite a 30-point performance by the Sea Warriors' Aaron Abrams.

Chaminade is 6-11 overall, 3-4 in the PacWest. HPU, which led 45-40 at halftime, is 7-13 and 4-5.

Roy Stigall III added 17 points for the Silverswords. Marvin Noble had 17 for HPU.



BASEBALL

HPU swept: Sonoma (Calif.) State swept a college baseball doubleheader from Hawai'i Pacific yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon Park, despite a six-hit performance by HPU's Tyler Ward.

Ward had three hits, including a double and three RBIs in a 14-10 loss in the first game. Sonoma's Colton Daines went 4 for 6, including three RBIs.

In the second game, Ward had three singles in a 9-2 loss. Sonoma State took control with a four-run first inning.

Sonoma State is 3-0, HPU 3-2.



WATER POLO

UH wins opener: The Hawai'i women's water polo team opened its season with a 12-5 win over Pacific last night at Stockton, Calif.

Sophomore Kristy Bagnall and junior Shannon Carroll each posted hat tricks for the Rainbow Wahine.

Ninth-ranked UH improved its series record to 11-0 against the Tigers.

Hawai'i will face No. 7 California today.



MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

Vitale featured: Former University of Hawai'i football player Falaniko Vitale will headline Super Brawl XXXIII tomorrow at Blaisdell Arena.

Vitale (15-3), a Waipahu High alum, will fight former Ultimate Fighting Championship champion Dave Menne.

Menne (32-9-2), who has not lost by submission in more than five years, is considered one of the top five fighters in the world at 185 pounds.

In another bout, Eddie Yagin, who fights out of Egan Inoue's Grappling Unlimited, will take on Jens Pulver.

Pulver is a former UFC champion and is ranked among the top three in the world at 155 pounds.
