Day of prayer unites nations

The World Day of Prayer, an ecumenical event uniting 179 countries in prayer, will be celebrated with prayers across the globe, from sunrise until the last sunset. This year's theme is "In Faith, Women Shape the Future."

Hawai'i's event is at 4 p.m. March 7, with prayer and song at Kawaiaha'o Church. The event begins with fellowship and a tour of the historic church, and ends with a 5 p.m. service. Marge Terpstra, a retired United Church of Christ missionary, will be guest speaker.

Church to mark 50th year

Wahiawa Christian Church, 1710 Royal Palm Drive, celebrates its 50th anniversary with presentations at 2 p.m. today and a potluck at 3 p.m. tomorrow.

Events include today's formal service, with video and historical readings, and a choral performance. Tomorrow will be a potluck.

Temple plans film festival

Temple Emanu-El is planning a full slate for its weeklong Second Annual Kirk Cashmere Jewish Film Festival, beginning Friday at the Restaurant Row 9 Theaters.

Highlights include the most recent Oscar best-documentary nominee, "My Architect;" as well as "Bonhoeffer," with its Christian and Jewish themes; "A Trumpet in the Wadi"; "All My Loved Ones"; "Klezmer on Fish St" and "Undying Love: True Stories of Courage and Faith."

After Friday's 7 p.m. screening of "My Architect," a panel organized by the American Institute of Architects will discuss featured architect Louis Kahn, whose son examines the life and career of his father in the film, and tries to reconcile the estrangement he felt as the child of a woman Kahn never married.

Film schedules can be picked up at the Restaurant Row 9 Theaters, 500 Ala Moana Blvd. or at Temple Emanu-El, 2550 Pali Highway. All films are $6 at the door except "My Architect," which is $7.75 evenings, $5.25 matinees. Festival Flash Passes are also available.

Concert celebrates history of blacks

"Ebony Daze II," a free concert for Black History Month, will take place at 3 p.m. Feb. 15 at First Presbyterian Church, 1822 Ke'eau-

moku St. It will feature excerpts from "The Gates of Justice" by Dave Brubeck, with artists Leon Williams, baritone; Julius Ahn, tenor; and the Rich Crandall Trio.

The Royal Hawaiian Band will perform excerpts of Brubeck's composition, based on text drawn from the Old Testament, ancient Hebrew teacher Hillel, and the writings of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
