UH softball team beats No. 23 Oregon State

Junior Melissa Coogan pitched a six-hitter with five strikeouts as host Hawai'i defeated No. 23 Oregon State, 3-1, last night in the Hawai'i Paradise Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Freshman first baseman Tyleen Tausaga hit a two-run homer in the first inning for the Rainbows, who improved to 2-1.

Sherina Galvan batted 2 for 3 for the Beavers (6-2), who scored an unearned run in the second to close to 2-1.

Hawai'i added an insurance run in the second when Ashley Ruff beat out a dribbler in front of the plate, advanced to second on Denise Dahlberg's sacrifice, and scored on Justina Kahaku's single.

In earlier games (result of the Alabama-Birmingham vs. St. Mary's game was not reported):

  • Tennessee 11, BYU 6: Lauren Mattox had two hits and three RBIs, and the 25th-ranked Lady Vols scored five runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings to beat the Cougars.
  • Tennessee 9, UAB: Lauren Mattox hit a grand slam to help the 25th-ranked Lady Vols start the season 3-0 for the first time since 1997.
  • OREGON STATE 5, ST. MARY'S 3: Kelly Petersen had two hits and three RBIs, and Ta'Tyana McElroy pitched shutout ball over the final six innings to boost the 23rd-ranked Beavers.

MORE SOFTBALL

UHH wins first: Hawai'i-Hilo won its first game of the season while Brigham Young-Hawai'i split two games for the second day in a row at the Las Vegas Classic.

Hilo fell behind 6-1 to Fort Lewis before rallying for a 13-7 win yesterday. Sarah Steele was the winning pitcher for the Vulcans (1-2).

Echo Hatch pitched BYUH to a 5-1 win over Minnesota-Mankato. The Seasiders then lost to Pittsburg State, 7-3. BYUH is 2-2.

The tournament concludes today.

BASEBALL

Hawai'i Pacific splits: Chase Nakamura hit an RBI single with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning as Hawai'i Pacific beat Sonoma (Calif.) State, 9-8, yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon Park.

Sonoma State pounded out 19 hits to win the second game, 17-3.

Geoff Say batted 4 for 8, including a home run, in the doubleheader for HPU (4-3). Tyler Ward added three hits and four RBIs.

Brandon Burgess went 4 for 8, including a double and home run, and scored six runs for Sonoma State (4-1).

The teams close the six-game series with a doubleheader today at Ke'ehi Lagoon, starting at 11 a.m.

WATER POLO

Cal hands UH its first loss: Seventh-ranked California scored five goals in the second quarter in handing the University of Hawai'i women's team its first loss of the season, 13-5, last night in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley, Calif.

Beth Novick scored a game-high four goals for the Rainbow Wahine (2-1, 1-1 MPSF), who play at Stanford today.

Hawai'i defeated Cal State Hayward, 14-2, Thursday night behind senior driver Rilea Stober's career highs of three goals and three steals.

FOOTBALL

White joins Dragons in AFL: Josh White, a former fullback/linebacker for the Hawaiian Islanders, has earned a roster spot with the Arena Football League's New York Dragons.

White will debut with the Dragons on Sunday, when New York plays the Georgia Force.
