Tennessee pitcher is perfect against UH

Tennessee's Monica Abbott struck out 13 in pitching a perfect game for a 2-0 victory over Hawai'i in the Hawai'i Paradise Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Amber Rheinhart hit a two-run homer in the second inning for Tennessee.

In the Rainbow Wahine's second game, April Crowell's double drove in Noelle Izumi in the sixth inning to lead UH to a 1-0 victory over St. Mary's (Calif.).

Izumi led off the inning with a triple.

Hawai'i Shannon Tabion pitched five scoreless innings, allowing five hits for the victory.

The Rainbow Wahine (2-2) play Tennessee at 1 p.m. today. The winner advances to the championship game at 3 p.m.

In other games, Brigham Young defeated Alabama Birmingham, 2-1; Oregon State shut out UAB, 3-0; Oregon State stopped Tennessee, 2-0 and BYU held off St. Mary's, 2-1.

BYUH wins, UH-Hilo splits: Echo Hatch scored on a single to left field by Chynna Wilcox in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Brigham Young Hawai'i an 8-7 victory over Biola (Calif.) in the Las Vegas Tournament yesterday.

Pitcher Hatch won her third game of the tournament.

BYUH is 3-2.

Hawai'i-Hilo (2-3) split its final two games at the Las Vegas Tournament.

The Vulcans lost their first game to Pittsburgh State (Kansas), 16-2, then routed Longwood College (Va.), 7-1.

In the second game, B.J. Shimamoto, Lisa Jackson and Laura Kimborowicz each had two hits for the Vulcans.



BASKETBALL

BYUH defeats Chaminade: Austin Smylie scored 20 points and Michael Stowell had 16 points and 10 rebounds as Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Chaminade, 77-66, in a Pacific West Conference basketball game in Cannon Activities Center at La'ie.

BYUH, ranked No. 15 in Division II, is 17-3 overall and a PacWest leading 7-1. Chaminade is 6-12 and 3-5.

The Seasiders outrebounded the Silverswords, 40-29.



BASEBALL

HPU, Sonoma State split doubleheader: Ikaika DuPonte had two hits and two RBIs and scored three runs to help Hawai'i Pacific to a 11-9 baseball victory over ninth-ranked Sonoma State and a split of a doubleheader at Ke'ehi Lagoon field.

Sonoma State (5-2) took the opener, 5-3.

Geoffrey Say was 3 for 4 for HPU (5-4) in the second game.

In the first game, Luke Carriere hit a three-run homer in the sixth.

UH falls: Kristy Bagnall and Shannon Carroll scored goals in Hawai'i's 6-2 loss to UCLA in the Rainbow Wahine's opener at the Stanford Invitational in the Avery Aquatic Center at Stanford, Calif., yesterday.

UH goalie Leanna Hahn had nine saves.
