Summer jobs offered at Haleakala

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK, Maui — Haleakala National Park is offering summer work programs for young people in visitor services and resource conservation.

Five paid positions in the Youth Conservation Corps are available to youths ages 15 to 18.

The program runs from June 21 to Aug. 13. Participants, who will be paid minimum wage, will work outdoors and in remote back-country settings on trail maintenance. Applications are due April 15.

High school students also may apply for positions on Student Conservation Association conservation crews. The program involves four weeks of trail work and fence construction in Haleakala's back country and a week of learning about Hawaiian cultural and natural history.

Meals and lodging are provided. Applications are due March 1.

Positions as Student Conservation Association resource assistants are available year-round in park resources management and interpretation.

High school graduates are eligible to apply for 16-week stints, which provide weekly stipends. Applications and other information are available online at www.thesca.org.

Volunteer opportunities for people of all ages are available year-round through Haleakala National Park's Volunteer-In-Parks program.

Positions are available for half-day, full-day, weekend and long-term projects, and include work in non-native species control, trail maintenance, litter pickup, visitor center staffing and administrative jobs.
