Abbott pitches Tennessee to softball Classic title

Monica Abbott pitched a six-hitter and struck out 15 as Tennessee topped Oregon State, 2-0, yesterday in the championship game of the Hawai'i Paradise Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Abbott (6-0) did not walk a batter.

Angela Brewer hit an RBI single and Lauren Mattox had an RBI double for the Lady Vols (6-1).

Mia Longfellow batted 3 for 3 for the Beavers (9-3).

In earlier games:

• Tennessee 4, Hawai'i 1: Monica Abbott pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and Tennessee scored three runs in the top of the seventh to advance to the championship game.

Hawai'i finished the tournament in third place.

• Oregon State 8, St. Mary's 0: Monica Hoffman and Ta'Tyana McElroy teamed on a five-inning perfect game with six strikeouts as Oregon State advanced to the championship game.

St. Mary's finished the tournament in fourth place.

• St. Mary's 5, Alabama-Birmingham 1: Jennifer Eaton pitched a four-hitter and Claudia Williams homered to lead St. Mary's.

Alabama-Birmingham finished the tournament in fifth place.
