Punahou earns top seed in girls state tournament

Advertiser Staff

Defending state champion Punahou received the No. 1 seed in the Ohana Hotels State Girls Soccer Championships, which begins tomorrow at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex.

Punahou (10-0) is the four-time Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion.

Also seeded are No. 2 Mililani (11-2-1), the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion, No. 3 Baldwin (10-1-3), the Maui Interscholastic League champion, and No. 4 Hawai'i Prep (15-2), the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion.

All four seeds receive first-round byes.

Leading the way for the Buffanblu is Rachel Lau, who has six goals, and Ashley Collins, who scored five, in an offense that had 15 of 22 players score this season.

Mililani is led by Sarah Yoro, who has 15 goals, including two in the OIA playoffs.

Baldwin returns two-time All-State performer Kami Kapaku, and Hawai'i Prep, which lost four all-BIIF first team selections to graduation, returns as the league's top seed. Ka Makani are led by seniors Marissa Faye and Hi'ilawe Dela Cruz, who scored nine goals each.

Kaua'i (7-0-1), the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champion, is the only other undefeated team in the tournament.

In a bracket change late yesterday, Kaua'i and King Kekaulike switched places.

Kaua'i plays 'Aiea and King Kekaulike moves into Kaua'i's original slot against Kailua. Both games are at 3 p.m.

A new Hawai'i High School Athletic Association guideline passed last summer stipulates that the unseeded league champion — in this case, Kaua'i — shall play the lowest seeded team in its bracket. 'Aiea is the No. 3 team out of the OIA. Kailua is No. 2.
