Q&A
Security settings limit macro use

Q. When I open a Word document, I get a message about macros potentially ruining my system. What does this mean?

A. Macros run a series of actions with just one command. They're handy, but hackers figured out they could be used for malicious purposes such as sending viruses. In response, Microsoft made it possible to limit macros' usage through a security setting. To find it in Word, click Tools, Macro and Security. You'll find three settings: low, medium and high. If you have anti-virus software running, the low setting should provide sufficient protection.

Q. Windows XP comes with System Restore. How much storage space does this feature occupy on the hard drive?

A. Windows sets aside 12 percent of your hard drive for System Restore points. The minimum setting is 200 megabytes. That probably is enough. To change the setting in Windows XP, click Start and Control Panel. Double-click System and select the System Restore tab. Under "Disk space usage," move the slider all the way to the left. Click Apply and OK.
