Road to recycling made of glassphalt

When you mix recycled glass and recycled asphalt, you get glassphalt, an innovative material used to pave roads.

Despite a state law that calls for using recycled glass whenever possible, glassphalt makes up only some 20 percent of Hawai'i's road construction material, and that's not enough.

An exception is Maui, where more than 90 percent of the glass collected ended up in the roads. We commend the Valley Isle for walking the walk in Hawai'i's quest to reuse glass instead of dumping it in the landfills or shipping it to the Mainland.

Recycling will remain a fantasy in the Islands until we roll up our sleeves and make it part of our landscape.
