Cornerback, lineman to join Warriors in 2005

Less than a week after announcing its 2004 recruiting class, the University of Hawai'i football team began working on the 2005 season, securing commitments from cornerback Terry Wilson of Junipero Serra High in Gardena, Calif., and defensive lineman Paul Harmon of Skyline High in Oakland.

Both players told The Advertiser yesterday they will sign scholarship agreements this week and enroll at UH in January 2005. They will participate in spring practice that year, and then have five years to play four seasons.

"This works out fine for me," said Wilson, who is 6 feet and 190 pounds.

Wilson, who played quarterback last season, said he will compete at cornerback for the Warriors. He ran an electronically timed 4.47 seconds over 40 yards at the Nike Combine last summer.

As a senior, he passed for more than 1,300 yards and rushed for another 300.

"He was our team MVP," Junipero Serra coach Scott Altenberg said.

Wilson was named to the California Interscholastic Federation's Southern Section X all-star team. He also will compete in the Shrine Game matching all-stars from California's private and public schools.

He is the starting center fielder on the baseball team.

Wilson said he does not mind attending a college 2,500 miles from his home. He lives in Chino, a 90-minute drive from his high school campus.

"It's a big commitment to play for us," Altenberg said. "He has to get up early every day."

Harmon, who is 6 feet 2 and 250 pounds, attended the same high school as UH graduate assistant Keith Bhonapha, a former Warrior defensive back.

Harmon turned down offers from Colorado State and New Mexico. "I enjoyed my recruiting trip (to Hawai'i)," Harmon said. "Everybody was so nice. I really had a good time out there."

Harmon was named to the Oakland Athletic League's second team.

In his spare time, Harmon repairs car engines. He also is a member of the Skyline High swimming team, competing in 100-meter individual medley (butterfly and backstroke) and 100-meter freestyle.
