Lam receives sportsmanship award

UCLA junior Chris Lam (homeschooled from Kaimuki) received the United States Tennis Association Sportsmanship Award at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle last Saturday.

Lam was chosen for the annual award by the 16 participating coaches for displaying outstanding sportsmanship and exemplifying the spirit of college tennis during the course of the tournament and throughout their careers.

He is the first Bruin to win the men's award.

Lam plays No. 2 singles and is currently ranked a career-high No. 18 in the ITA national singles rankings.

• Suzuki earns Big West honor: Cal State Fullerton catcher Kurt Suzuki, a 2001 graduate of Baldwin High, was named Big West Player of the Week after batting 6 for 9 in the Titans' series sweep of UNLV this past weekend.

The junior batted 4 for 4 with a career-high four RBIs in Sunday's 14-6 win.

Suzuki's .526 batting average and nine RBIs lead Titan regulars.

He also won the weekly honor last season for a game-winning home run against Long Beach State.

Men's Wrestling

Cornell junior Travis Lee (Saint Louis '01 of Liliha) defeated third-ranked Mark Jayne of Illinois, 7-4, at the NWCA All-Star Classic at the University of Northern Iowa on Feb. 2.

Lee is the nation's top-ranked wrestler at 133 pounds.

Lee also pinned Steve Sutton of Columbia in 1:31 in an Ivy League match last Saturday.

FOOTBALL

Golden West College tight end Brandyn McCall, a 2003 Mid-Pacific Institute graduate, earned first-team Mission Conference honors.

McCall, who is 6 feet 5 and 240 pounds, caught 22 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns.

He caught a season-high six passes against Riverside College.
