'Aiea pedestrian dies after being hit when crossing road

A man died at The Queen’s Medical Center last night after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing Kamehameha Highway near McGrew Point in 'Aiea.

It was the second pedestrian death in 22 hours on Kamehameha Highway in the 'Aiea-Pearl City area. In both cases, the pedestrian was not in a crosswalk, police said.

The victim last night was a 39-year-old who was struck at 6:56 p.m. 300 feet from Honomanu Street. He died at Queen’s at 9:16 p.m. The pickup driver, a 25-year-old man, was not seriously hurt.

On Tuesday night, 52-year-old Steven Tanaka was hit by a car while crossing Kamehameha Highway near Pali Momi Street in Pearlridge at 9 p.m. He died about two hours later at Queen’s.

Last night’s death increased O'ahu’s 2004 traffic death count to 11 as compared with nine by this time last year. Pedestrians have accounted for six of the 11 deaths this year.

Capt. Stephen Kim of the Pearl City patrol district said jaywalking along the corridor of Kamehameha Highway from McGrew Point to Pearlridge Center is "like playing Russian roulette" because the roadway is wide and crossing lights far apart.

Motorists should anticipate jaywalkers in the area, especially at night. The chain-link fence on the median near Pearlridge Center has deterred jaywalking, Kim said. But plantings on the median in other areas make it difficult at night for motorists to see pedestrians, who often dart onto the roadway from the bushes, Kim added.
