THE LEFT LANE
Trendy purse is for stowing your pooch

Advertiser Staff and News Services

If Paris Hilton and Sarah Jessica Parker's tastes are any indication of what's ultra-trendy, consider the Besso Jelly Kelly pet carrier a must-have.

The bags — as seen on the shoulders of these stars — are available at Hawai'i Doggie Bakery & Gift Shop in three sizes and a variety of colors, and cost $120 to $132.

A heart-adorned bag is among the many Valentine's Day-inspired pooch products for sale at the boutique. Also check out the made-in-Hawai'i pet dresses with matching bone-shaped toys in a variety of prints: red with white hearts, red gingham, pink gingham and lavender.

For details, see www.hawaiidoggiebakery.com or call 521-7297.

Second-Chance Prom to benefit IHS shelter

GIBSON
For all you singles with nothing to do on Valentine's Day, there is something going on that could help a good cause and get you a date at the same time.

The Institute for Human Services (O'ahu's only 24-hour emergency shelter for the homeless), along with Christian radio station The Fish 95.5 FM, Matchmaking Introductions Hawaii and Gold's Gym are sponsoring the Second Chance Concert & Prom, featuring a dream date auction for singles as well as packages for couples. Bidders can win date packages, including helicopter tours, horseback rides and dinners at restaurants such as Roy's and Hy's Steak House.

Even Miss Hawaii 2003, Kanoelani "Kanoe" Gibson, will be on the auction block for charity along with five other bachelorettes and six bachelors. Performers include Gibson, her sister, Maila Gibson, as well as the Ben Vegas Band, Reign and Taimane.

Doors open at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Sheraton Waikiki Ballroom for the upscale, black-tie-optional event. Tickets are $25. Auction proceeds go to IHS and are tax-deductible. Call 922-4422 for reservations.

More love than it's reasonable to munch

Who knew Wal-Mart had predictions for Valentine's Day? Someone there has been crunching numbers regarding the profits of love. The company expects that:
  • Customers will buy enough Giant Hershey's Valentine's Kisses that, if stacked, would reach a height of 50 Eiffel Towers.
  • If one greeting card were given every second, it would take 170 days to give away Valentines bought at Wal-Mart this season.
  • Customers will buy enough Sweetheart Conversation Hearts that, if lined up, could stretch from Wal-Mart's Bentonville, Ark., headquarters to London.
