Kailua defeated King Kekaulike, 2-1, in penalty kicks (4-2); 'Aiea beat Kaua'i, 2-0; Pearl City blanked Hilo, 4-0; and Kalaheo defeated Waiakea, 5-1.
"That's cool," said Kailua senior goalkeeper Johnalynn Ilae of the OIA sweep. "I think (OIA schools) give each other so much competition, come playoff time, we're ready."
Ilae stopped the shots of the second and third shooters in the shoot out, and although the second shooter for Kailua missed, senior Ona Byer made the fifth attempt, giving the Surfriders an insurmountable 4-2 lead and the win.
"I left like that would be my contribution for the day, that was what I had to do," Ilae said. "I would have rather we won in regular time. Somehow it's not as satisfying as a win in regulation, but it was still good. It was exciting. I'm still frazzled."
Kerre Pereza of Kailua (10-2-2) and Melissa Abellanida of King Kekaulike (8-2-5) scored in regulation time.
Pereza's goal came in the 22nd minute when she made a 30-yard run down the right side of the field to just outside the 6-yard box and finished the play by slotting the ball into the right side of the goal.
Abellanida scored in the 34th minute off an assist from Sara Matsumoto, who connected with Abellanida as she was making a through run across the field.
Abellanida, who started off on the right side of the field, dribbled to just outside the penalty box and passed the ball into the left side of the goal.
"It was really nice," she said of Matsumoto's pass. "I was running right through and she passed it perfectly."
Neither team could score in the second half and two 10-minute overtime periods.
"The girls played well, we passed the ball around," King Kekaulike coach Gundi Dancil said. "The O'ahu teams are doing good, my hat's off to them. I felt we had good chances, but that's soccer."
It was the second straight year King Kekaulike of the Maui Interscholastic League lost in the first round in penalty kicks. Last year it lost to 'Aiea, 1-0.
"I think it just has to do with so many teams and so many tough games," Kailua coach Wil Kimura said of the OIA sweep. "We're pretty hardened. They see the same teams over and over, it doesn't give you different looks at different styles. The variety helps us. But (the Neighbor Island teams) are getting tougher and tougher every year."
Kalaheo 5, Waiakea 1: The Mustangs had a 3-0 lead after the first 15 minutes, behind two goals from senior forward Tina Garcia and one from senior Jenna Tomasa.
Garcia scored in the fifth and 13th minutes and Tomasa in the 15th minute.
Senior Tiana Akiu scored in the 60th minute and junior Anela Gonzales in the 78th for Kalaheo (11-4).
Junior Elizabeth Brauher scored in the final minute for Waiakea (13-3) of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation.
Pearl City 4, Hilo 0: Junior Blessing Drumeller scored twice to lead the Chargers (10-3-1) past the Vikings (12-4) of the BIIF.
Drumeller scored in the 20th and 73rd minutes.
Sophomore Lauren Maeshiro (26th minute) and junior Chelsea Arakawa (72nd) also scored.
Freshman Carisa Calpo assisted on the first two goals for Pearl City.
'Aiea 2, Kaua'i 0: After playing to a scoreless tie in the first half, senior midfielder Jodie Toyama scored on a scramble off a corner kick from freshman Michelle Shiroma in the 44th minute as Na Ali'i handed the Red Raiders (7-1-1), the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champions, their first loss.
Sophomore Ambree Ako sealed the win for 'Aiea (13-1) when she scored in the 75th minute.
