Deadline nears to apply for school transfers
Advertiser Staff
Parents have until March 1 to apply for school transfers for their children next school year under the federal No Child Left Behind law or the state Department of Education's geographic exception policy.
Students whose schools have not made adequate yearly progress under the law for two consecutive years are eligible to transfer to other schools, and the DOE pays for transportation.
The DOE gives priority in transfer requests to students with the most academic and economic need. Few parents have taken advantage of the transfer option during the first two school years since the law took effect.
The DOE also allows students to attend schools outside their neighborhoods under its geographic exception policy.
School slots are awarded based on space available under both programs, and a lottery is held when there are more applications than available slots.
Transfers under No Child Left Behind are given a priority, but the DOE also gives consideration to students interested in a particular program of study at a school and to students who have siblings or a parent at a school.
Applications are available at all public schools, and should be turned in to the school the student now attends. Schools will forward the applications to the school where the student wants to transfer.
