Car crash kills Kaua'i woman

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — A 78-year-old Lihu'e woman was killed and her 72-year-old female passenger seriously injured Wednesday when their car collided with another vehicle as it turned off Kuhio Highway near the Kaua'i Community Correctional Center in Wailua.

Police said Amy Tamura died several hours after the 8:49 a.m. collision. Her passenger was in critical condition at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. The four occupants of the other vehicle were treated and released.

In an unrelated accident, a 74-year-old woman was critically injured at 7:40 a.m. yesterday as she was walking across Kaumuali'i Highway near the Lawa'i post office. She was treated at Wilcox Memorial Hospital and later taken to The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu.

Man charged in rifle incident

A 39-year-old Wai'anae man was charged Wednesday with three counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and third-degree assault for allegedly pointing a rifle at three people, including the boyfriend of his estranged wife.

Russell A. Medeiros, 39, is being held in lieu of $50,000 total bail.

According to a police report filed at District Court, Medeiros allegedly confronted his wife, from whom he has been separated for two years, her boyfriend and two other men Jan. 31 in a parked car in Makaha.

He reached into the car and punched the boyfriend, and then another man who tried to intervene, the report said.

Medeiros then took out a hunting rifle and pointed it at his wife's car as it sped off, and then at the two other men left behind.



CENTRAL

Teens sought in jewelry theft

Police arrested a 16-year-old boy in 'Ewa Beach and are looking for three other teenage boys in connection with Wednesday's armed robbery of a Salt Lake jewelry store.

The robbery at LG Creations was reported at 12:45 p.m. The youths confronted the store owner and his wife, both 38, and took an undisclosed amount of Hawaiian gold jewelry from the display case. One of the youths was carrying a pistol.

Police received a description and license number of the getaway car. The green Honda was found in 'Ewa Beach, and police arrested the 16-year-old driver, who was identified by the victims. The boy was booked and released pending further investigation.

Learn to report a drug house

Residents will learn how to report a suspected drug house at a monthly Ice Breaker meeting from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Kailua District Park. The presentation is sponsored by the No-Drug Zone Kailua task force.
