Rainbow Wahine lose two at softball tourney

Notre Dame rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Hawai'i, 8-7, on the first day of the UNLV Softball Classic in Eller Media Stadium at Las Vegas.

The host Lady Rebels defeated the Rainbow Wahine, 1-0, last night.

Notre Dame won it on Kellie Middleton's two-out, two-run homer off starter Melissa Coogan. It was Middleton's first hit of the season for the Irish, who were playing their season opener.

Stacy Ritter was 3 for 4 and Justina Kahaku 2 for 4 for the Rainbow Wahine (3-5).

In UNLV's victory, Amber Campbell singled in Bridge Byrne in the top of the sixth for the game's only run. UNLV is 3-3.

UH is scheduled to play Portland State and Wisconsin today.

MORE SOFTBALL

BYUH splits doubleheader: Echo Hatch pitched a five-hit shutout to lead Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a 4-0 victory as the Seasiders split a doubleheader with Concordia (Calif.) at BYUH field in La'ie yesterday.

Concordia won the second game, 7-3.

BYUH is 4-3, Concordia 3-1.

Hatch struck out three and walked one. The Seasiders drew 13 walks and stranded 14 runners in the first game.

FOOTBALL

Alcorn State signs four: Four Saint Louis School players signed letters of intent to play at Alcorn State yesterday, the school announced.

Advertiser all-state selections Dylan Moss, a linebacker, B.J. Batts, a running back, and offensive lineman Bronson Carvalho signed with the Southwestern Athletic Conference school in Mississippi. Also joining them is offensive lineman Oren Long.

The four players helped the Crusaders to the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship and runner-up finish in the state Division I tournament.

UH ATHLETICS

Free tickets for military: The University of Hawai'i athletic department is offering free tickets to uniformed military personnel and their families for three events this month.

It is part of UH's Koa Aloha military support program.

"We are please to be able to open the doors to men and women of the armed forces as a show of support for their critical role in the nation's defense," said UH athletic director Herman Frazier.

Tickets must be obtained the day before the event at the Stan Sheriff Center box office. A valid military ID must be presented and is good for up to three dependents.

The events that tickets are being offered are:

  • Thursday, Feb. 19, Rainbow Wahine basketball vs. Boise State, 7 p.m. at Stan Sheriff Center.
  • Friday, Feb. 20, baseball vs. UH-Hilo, 6:30 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
  • Thursday, Feb. 26, men's volleyball vs. UCLA, 7 p.m. at Stan Sheriff Center.

PADDLING

Regatta today: Kailua Beach Park will be host today to an all-day canoe regatta that was canceled last week because of a sewage spill at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

Na Opio Canoe Racing Association will sponsor the events beginning at 9 a.m. Races will continue until about 4 p.m.
