Queen Street fire confined

Firefighters fought a blaze in the storage room of a three-story building on Queen Street last night.

The fire, reported shortly before 9 p.m. at 742 Queen St., was confined to the single room and extinguished quickly, HFD Capt. Kenison Tejada said.

Flames were visible through the windows when firefighters first arrived,

Tejada said. The fire was brought under control within minutes. No damage estimates were available late last night.

The storage room belonged to a sailboat company, Tejada said. The East Asian Basket Company occupies space on the lower floor of the building.

H-3 crash fatal to motorcyclist

A 23-year-old motorcyclist was killed yesterday morning when he lost control of his motorcycle while exiting from H-3 onto the Moanalua Freeway.

The man, from Kailua, was driving a Honda sports bike at high speeds at about 10:50 a.m., police said.

He made the first sharp curve as he was exiting onto the Moanalua Freeway, but lost control on the second curve. The bike fell and slammed into a guard rail.

The driver, who was wearing a helmet, was conscious at the scene but died at The Queen's Medical Center.

Homeowner has lots of help

Honolulu Habitat for Humanity and Home Depot stores have broken ground for a new home in Waimanalo that will be built with donated material and labor, including 500 hours of work from the homeowner.

The Kahapea family received land from the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and will spend every Saturday working on their house until it is completed in August. Home Depot employees also will volunteer. The home will be the 57th built by Habitat on O'ahu for low-income families. To get involved with Honolulu Habitat for Humanity, call 485-2355.

Financial-aid workshops set

Hawai'i students applying for college this fall can get a jump on learning to apply for financial aid — and filling out the complex federal form needed — in three free workshops today.

The program, "College Goal Sunday," is designed to walk new students and their parents through the process of filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. The sessions start at 1 p.m. in the cafeterias of three schools: Kapolei Middle School, McKinley High School and Castle High School.

Students are asked to bring their 2003 IRS Tax Return (or bring parents' return if the student is under 24) plus their W-2 Form or

other 2003 income and benefits information. The tax forms do not have to be complete.
