WASHINGTON — Here are some actions in Congress last week.

Key Senate votes

1. Seat belts

The Senate on Wednesday rejected, 57-41, a measure that would have forced states to toughen their seat belt laws. A nay vote was to keep the measure alive.

Hawai'i votes: Daniel Akaka (D) NAY; Dan Inouye (D) NAY



2. Highway bill

The Senate on Thursday passed, 76-21, a six-year, $318 billion highway and mass transit spending bill. A yea vote was to pass the bill.

Hawai'i votes: Daniel Akaka (D) YEA; Dan Inouye (D) YEA

What's ahead: Congress is taking a weeklong recess for President's Day. The House and Senate return the week of Feb. 23.
