BYUH holds off Western New Mexico in basketball

Austin Smylie, the reigning Pacific West Conference player of the week, scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Brigham Young-Hawai'i to an 86-82 basketball victory over Western New Mexico at Silver City, N.M., last night.

BYUH, ranked No. 17 in NCAA Division II, is 19-4 overall and leads the PacWest at 9-2. Western New Mexico is 7-14 and 4-7.

The Seasiders trailed by as many as four points in the first half, before tying it at 41 at halftime. They never trailed in the second despite a comeback attempt by the Mustangs.

Michael Stowell added 16 points for BYUH. Stowell (6) and Shawn Opunui (5) combined for 11 of BYUH's 16 steals, but the Seasiders also had 25 turnovers, seven by Smylie.

Matt Enriquez had a game-high 25 points for the Mustangs.

HPU falls: Jerett Skrifvars had a game-high 30 points and 10 rebounds to lead Montana State-Billings to a 104-83 basketball victory over visiting Hawai'i Pacific in a Pacific West Conference game last night.

Billings is 15-7 overall, 6-5 in the PacWest. HPU is 8-15 and 5-7.

Trae Fortier added 25 points and David Carse 22 for Billings.

HPU's Aaron Abrams scored 29 points, including 12 of 12 in free-throw attempts.

The Sea Warriors trailed 49-32 at halftime.



SOFTBALL

UH wins, loses: April Crowell hit a two-run single to right field in the top of the ninth inning to lead Hawai'i to a 7-5 victory over Wisconsin in the UNLV Softball Classic at Las Vegas yesterday.

Earlier yesterday, Michelle Hext pitched a four-hitter to lead Portland State to a 6-0 victory over UH.

UH is 4-6 overall and 1-3 in the tournament.

In the UH ninth against Wisconsin, Justina Kahaku was placed at second using the international tie-breaker rule. Tracie Uchima lined out to right for the first out. Noelle Izumi then hit a single to center, moving Kahaku to third. Izumi took second on the throw. Crowell then hit her two-run single to make it 7-5.

Shannon Tabion pitched a complete game to earn the victory. Tyleen Tausaga had three hits.

HPU sweeps: Hawai'i Pacific scored all of its runs in the first inning en route to a 4-1 victory over Concordia (Calif.) and a sweep of a doubleheader at Sea Warrior Field in Kane'ohe.

HPU (4-0) won the first game 9-6. Concordia is 5-3.

Holly Garcia went 3 for 3 and drove in two runs for the Sea Warriors in the second game.

Brandy Choy Foo was 3 for 4 and scored three runs, and Jamie Reyes had two hits, two RBIs and scored two runs in the first game.



•  Speed clinic starts at UH on Saturday

Those looking to feed their need for speed can sign up for the Hawai'i Speed and Quickness Clinic beginning Saturday at the University of Hawai'i's Cooke Field.

The participation fee of $10 includes a Jamba Juice coupon, Subway Sandwiches coupon and instruction from Hawai'i coaches Rich Miano and Mel deLaura.

The first clinics are Saturday and next Sunday. For ages 7-12, registration is at 10 a.m. with their session from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

For participants 13 and older, registration is at 1:30 p.m. with their session from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

• Wright sets school mark: Sophomore Nicole Wright broke her own University of Hawai'i record in the 60-meter hurdles at the Holiday Inn Team Invitational yesterday at Boise, Idaho.

Wright finished in 9.53 seconds, beating her old mark of 9.55 set at the Huskie Invitational in Seattle two weeks ago.
