Art teacher recognized

Waldtraut Krohn-Ching, a teacher at the University of Hawai'i Laboratory School, has been selected by the National Art Education Association to receive the Hawai'i Art Educator of the Year Award.

The award honors an outstanding member from each state or province association whose service and contribution to art education merits recognition.

The award will be presented at the NAEA National Convention in Denver in April.

"Ms. Krohn-Ching exemplifies the highly qualified individuals active in the field of art education today: leaders, teachers, students, scholars and advocates who give their best to the profession," said NAEA president Mary Ann Stankiewicz.


ILWU elects president

Fred Galdones has been elected president of the International Longshore & Warehouse Union.

Other officers are vice president Donna Domingo, secretary/treasurer Guy Fujimura, O'ahu division director Dave Mori, and O'ahu business agents Shane Ambrose, Brandon Bajo-Daniel, Karl Lindo, Larry Ruiz, Brian Tanaka, Tyrone Tahara and Michael Yamaguchi.


Crimestoppers picks leaders

Crimestoppers Honolulu Inc. has elected David Reed as its president.

Reed is head of Dave Reed Marketing and has been a member of the CrimeStoppers Board of Directors since 1990.

Other officers elected include Michael Carvalho, former deputy chief of police, first vice president; Leolani Kini, principal broker, Hawaii Pacific Venture Inc., second vice president; Albert "Spike" Denis, chairman of Safeguard Services Inc., secretary; and George Cramer, vice president, security, Bank of Hawaii, treasurer.


Student goes on musical tour

Jane Chung of Waipahu, a first-year student at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, traveled with the college's orchestra and glee club to southwest Florida recently.

She participated in performances in Sarasota and Tampa.

Chung, who plays the violin, is majoring in chemistry and politics.

She is the daughter of Kil Tak and Jung Sook Chung of Waipahu.


Women's group selects officers

Michelle Kakazu, director of financial planning for Hawaii Pacific Health, has been elected president of the Organization of Women Leaders.

Other officers are president-elect Janice Nielsen, vice president/private sector Joelle Wada, vice president/public sector Denise Konan, program vice president Barbra Pleadwell, recording secretary, Rebecca Ryan, executive director, Mo'ili'ili Community Center; corresponding secretary Mary Sheridan and treasurer Lulani Arquette.
