Runners prepare to start the Great Aloha Run in front of Aloha Tower. Nearly 20,000 of them finished the 8.1-mile course from Aloha Tower to Aloha Stadium. Kalid Abdalah of Berkeley, Calif., won the men's race for the second year in a row, while Chelsea Smith of Spokane, Wash., won the women's race.

Parents pushing strollers were a common sight yesterday at the run. School bands, high school cheerleaders and Kenny Endo's taiko drummers were also on hand, but some were focused on the race.

Runners brace for the gun that goes off to signal the start of the race, lest they be taken by surprise. A smiley-face balloon shares the space with runners as they prepare to start the 20th Great Aloha Run.
