Lajola loses in junior tennis semifinal round

'Aiea's Dennis Lajola saw his run through the USTA National Junior Open at Central O'ahu Regional Park end yesterday in the semifinal round.

Second seed Tye Myers, of Naples, Fla., ousted the unseeded Lajola, 6-4, 6-4.

"I had some break-point opportunities I didn't get and was up in a lot of games but, at 15, he is really good, really fast on the court," Myers said of Lajola. "He came out a little slow in the first set and then stepped it up a notch."

Myers will play No. 3 seed and defending champion Treat Huey, of Alexandria, Va. Huey beat No. 1 seed Jonathan Tragardh, 6-2, 6-1.

The girls final will pit No. 1 seed Tarakaa Bertrand, of Great Falls, Va., against No. 10 seed Sarah Fansler, of Laguna Niguel, Calif.

Bertrand beat Samantha Orlin, 6-2, 6-1, and Fansler upset No. 2 seed Amanda Fink, 7-5, 6-7 (3), 5-2 (retired with injury).

In girls doubles, two Hawai'i teams lost in the semifinals.

Chloe Bihag and Heidi Kaloi fell to the top-ranked team of Bertrand and Orlin, 8-6, while Kalei Gora and Cheyenne Reveche lost to the No. 2 team of Fansler and Clarissa Fermin.

The singles finals will start at 9 a.m. today; the doubles finals at noon.

BASKETBALL

Chaminade rolls: Roy Stigall and Bryon Sykes each scored 22 points as Chaminade routed Montana State-Billings, 107-75, last night in a Pacific West Conference men's game at McCabe Gym.

Nick Frey added 20 points and Scott Metcalf 19 for the Silverswords (7-12, 4-5 PacWest).

Jarett Skrifvars had game-highs of 30 points and 12 rebounds for Billings (15-7, 6-6).

Hawai'i-Hilo prevails: Justin Griffin and Ryan Hogue scored 18 points apiece as Hawai'i-Hilo thumped Western New Mexico, 89-74, last night in a Pacific West Conference men's game at Afook-Chinen Civic.

Joe Travis added 16 points for the Vulcans (13-7, 5-5 PacWest).

Matt Enriquez led Western New Mexico (7-15, 4-8) with 17 points.

SOFTBALL

Rainbow Wahine swept: Loyola Marymount swept the visiting University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine, 5-1 and 4-2, yesterday in a non-conference doubleheader.

Loyola Marymount is 6-3, UH is 5-8.

Sophomore Ashley Ruff batted 2 for 3, including her first career home run, for Hawai'i in the opener.
