Creative juices and video know-how are what it takes for Hawai'i teens to win a chance for some small-screen spotlight in the 2004 Teen Video Awards Contest, which encourages students to produce their own public-service announcement on substance-abuse awareness.

The contest, open to public and private high school and middle school students statewide, is presented by the Hawaii Medical Service Association. Working individually or in teams, teens can showcase their message and production talent to win video equipment for their schools. The top public-service announcements also will be aired on local TV stations later this year.

"It's an opportunity for these young people to produce messages that will resonate and communicate with their peers," said Cliff Cisco, senior vice president of HMSA.

Winners, who will be awarded May 6, will be named in the following categories: best anti-drug commercial, best anti-underage drinking commercial, best anti-smoking commercial and best of show.

The maximum length for videos is 27 seconds. Deadline is April 1. Packets with rules, entry and release forms, details on copyrights, and a sample script are available at schools statewide, or visit www.hmsa.com/tva. For more information, call 948-5084.
