Women's beginner classes being offered

The Hawai'i State Women's Golf Association will have five free beginning golf classes for women in the next two months on the major islands. The series is financed by the foundation and grants from the United States Golf Association.

Each clinic will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon. In addition to an introduction to basic terminology, equipment, etiquette, rules and scoring, much of the morning will be spent with a golf professional who will teach the fundamentals of putting, chipping and driving.

Clinic schedule:

  • Feb. 28: Leilehua (Wahiawa);
  • March 6: Maui Dunes (Kahului, Maui);
  • March 13: Puakea (Lihu'e, Kaua'i);
  • March 13: Hilo Municipal (Big Island);
  • March 20: Olomana (Waimanalo).

Pearl Open featured on TV

A feature on the 26th annual Hawai'i Pearl Open Championship, won 11 days ago by Greg Meyer at Pearl Country Club, will be on Oceanic Cable, Channel 16, starting Saturday.

The half-hour show is the second television production of 808Golf.com. It is presented by Turtle Bay Resort and also sponsored by Pro-Am Golf Shop. Dave Vinton and Scotty B. are hosts. It will recap Meyer's successful title defense.

The first show Saturday begins at 8 p.m. There will be rebroadcasts Sunday (4 a.m. and 8 p.m.), Monday (4 a.m. and 10:30 p.m.) and Tuesday (6:30 a.m.).

Kapolei women's better ball tourney

Tomorrow is the entry deadline for the Kapolei Women's Golf Club Better Ball Tournament.

It will be March 22, at 7 a.m. Entry fee is $75 per player. All women with an established handicap of 36 (33.2 index), as of March 1, are eligible. There is no age restriction. Handicap index discrepancy between partners can be no greater than 10.0.

Palmer featured on 'Golf Hawai'i'

Arnold Palmer will talk about his long history in Hawai'i, golf technology, Michelle Wie and more on the eighth "Golf Hawai'i" show of the 2004 season.

The first broadcast on The Golf Channel will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. It will be shown again at 8:30 p.m., and Thursday (10 p.m.), Feb. 28 (7 a.m.) and March 1 (8 a.m.). Mauna Kea Resort also will be featured.
