NCAA certifies UH athletic department

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i-Manoa athletic department has received full certification from the NCAA, which indicates UH is "in substantial conformity with operating principles" of the governing body of collegiate athletics, the school announced yesterday.

The UH program was fully certified in 1997 in the NCAA's initial review of Division I programs. The latest certification involved a self-study that was submitted to an NCAA committee for review. The certification is good for 10 years.

The certification program, in which all 325 Division I programs participate, examines a school's governance and commitment to rules compliance, academic integrity, fiscal integrity and equity, welfare and sportsmanship.

BOXING

Guillermo eliminated: Wai'anae's Samson Guillermo was eliminated in the U.S. Olympic Team Boxing Trials when he lost a 34-32 decision to Miguel Albares of Fort Carson, Colo., in a 119-pound division yesterday at Tunica, Miss.

In his opening round match of the double-elimination tournament on Tuesday, Guillermo lost to Sergio Ramos of Sacramento, Calif., 17-14.

Trials are part of the process for picking the U.S. Olympic boxing team. The top two in each of 11 Olympic weight classes advance to U.S. Olympic Box-Offs in Cleveland on Feb. 27 and 28.

Box-off winners must place first or second in one of two Americas qualifiers in Mexico (March 12-20) or Brazil (April 4-11) to make the U.S. Olympic team.

Guillermo, 21, won the U.S. Amateur Boxing Championships and the U.S. Challenge last year, which earned him a spot in the U.S. Olympic team trials.

HPU men, BYUH women win: The top-ranked Hawai'i Pacific men's tennis team defeated third-ranked Brigham Young University-Hawai'i, 6-3, yesterday in La'ie.

HPU won four of six singles matches and two of three doubles in a rematch of last year's NCAA Division II championship won by BYUH.

The BYUH women's team swept all six singles matches in beating HPU, 6-0, to extend its winning streak to 68 matches.

FOOTBALL

Islanders sign pair: Former University of Montana quarterback Brian Ah Yat and Saint Louis School alum Gabe Amey have signed with the Hawaiian Islanders of the af2.

Ah Yat, an Iolani School graduate, played with the Arena Football League's Chicago Rush last season after spending time with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League and the Hawai'i Hammerheads. He threw for 3,615 yards and 42 touchdowns in his senior year at Montana.

Amey, a former standout at Menlo College, spent two years with the Macon Knights of the af2 before moving to the Carolina Cobras of the AFL. However, because of a knee injury, he was forced to sit the entire season.

"Getting Gabe and Brian are big pluses for our team," said Islanders head coach Cal Lee. Both are expected to compete for starting positions.
