Explosive device found at station

Police recovered a homemade explosive device last night while booking a 25-year-old man on suspicion of disorderly conduct at the downtown Chinatown substation.

The man, a Keolu Hills resident, was arrested on the 100 block of North Pauahi Street near the River of Life Mission at 11:19 p.m. Police said he was accused of swinging a knife. He was later booked for possessing a prohibited explosive device, which police declined to describe.

Federal agents and police bomb technicians were at the scene. The alleged offense occurred in a Weed & Seed district and could lead to federal charges.

Drug suspect caught after tip

A CrimeStoppers tip led to the arrest last night of federal fugitive Nicole Iona, who was wanted for allegedly distributing crystal methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a public school.

Iona, 28, was arrested at 6:15 p.m. at 1811 Republican St. in Kalihi.

Kamai to lead homicide unit

Lt. David Kamai has been named supervisor of Honolulu Police Department homicide investigations.

Kamai, 45, previously headed the Family Violence Unit and was head of the crisis negotiation team.

Kamai succeeds Bill Kato, who has been reassigned to the Central Receiving Division.

Pickup linked to burglary

Police investigating a break-in at Macy’s Pearlridge store early Wednesday are looking for a dark-colored 2000 Dodge Ram pickup truck with a camper shell that was driven through a glass door.

The truck is possibly green or teal and has substantial damage to its rear, police said. License plates recovered at the scene were not for the truck, police said.

Surveillance tapes of the 3 a.m. burglary showed two thieves smashing the jewelry counter and taking items.

Anyone with information on the suspects or truck can call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or Detective Dennis DuPont at 455-8344.
