Ironman qualifying race June 13 on Big Island

A new qualifying race for the Ironman Triathlon World Championship is scheduled for June 13 on the Big Island.
The qualifying triathlon will start with the swim at the Hapuna Beach. Race officials, who are working to finalize the necessary permits for the race, plan to use part of Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway for the bike course, while the bike-run transition will be on the grounds of the Mauna Lani Resort. The qualifying race is open to all Hawai'i residents. Thirty-five athletes from the Big Island and 20 from the other Islands will earn berths in the Ironman Triathlon World Championships on Oct. 16. Only those with three years' Hawai'i residency are eligible for the qualifying spots.

Junior water polo classes
A junior water polo program, run by University of Hawai'i coach Michel Roy, will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays at UH's Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Boys and girls, ages 6 to 12, will learn basics of the sport and strengthen their abilities. Participants must be comfortable swimming in deep water.
Cost is $80 a month or $70 per child, per month if two or more are enrolled.

Nature Conservancy hikes
The Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i has scheduled the following hikes at the Honouliuli Preserve:
Palikea Trail, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m, March 7. Considered moderate, some steep drop offs.
Kalua'a Loop Trail, 3 miles, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., March 27. Considered moderate, begins gradually uphill.
