Turkish event on UH campus

"The Manifestation of Love," with live Turkish ceremonial music, will be at 7:30 p.m. March 6 at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Campus Center Ballroom.
The evening will feature classical Turkish music and the prayer dancing of the Whirling Dervishes and will include Rumi poetry recitations by Dan Furst and Maile Rietow. Musicians trained in Turkish ceremonial music will play the ney (reed flute), violin, drum, laute (similar to the oud) and flute, and a dozen Mevlevi Semazen (Turners). There will be dervish whirling from Sema, the whirling ceremony honoring the great Sufi Master Jelaluddin Rumi.

Ex-bishop, wife in presentation
The Right Rev. Bob Jones, retired bishop of Wyoming and currently interim rector at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church, and his wife, Mary Page, founder of Rag Dolls 2Love (an organization that makes rag dolls for children in war-torn countries), recently returned from four years in East Jerusalem.
They'll be discussing "The Outside to the Inside Moving from the External Images to the Faces of Palestinians Today" at 7 p.m. Monday at the Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Ave., as a presentation sponsored by Friends of Sabeel in Hawai'i. Information: 949-2220.
Author to speak at Hale Ohana
Nationally known speaker Tony Campolo, in Hawai'i for the Hawaiian Islands Ministry 2004 conference next week, will be speaking at 6 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church's Hale Ohana on the topic, "Rise Up, O Men of God."
Besides his speaking engagements, Campolo is the author of 29 books, the latest: "Which Jesus?"

Baha'i members to begin fast
Members of the Baha'i faith in Hawai'i will begin their annual period of fasting, abstaining from food and drink from sunrise to sunset for 19 days, on March 2.
Like Lent in Christianity and Ramadan in Islam, the Baha'i Fast is a period of meditation and prayer when individuals reflect on spiritual life and prepare for the new year which begins March 21. Information: 595-3314.
Speech looks at abortion trends
Annelle Amaral, the public affairs director of Planned Parenthood, will speak at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow as part of the Social Justice Council of the First Unitarian Church's Issues and Action Forum on "Being Pro-choice in Hawai'i: Emerging Federal Trends."
A short discussion session will follow the speech. Other topics in the series will be: the exhaustion of fossil fuels, civil liberties issues in the Homeland Security legislation and a panel on gay marriage.
