Rainbows split two in softball tourney

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i women's softball team split a pair of games yesterday on the opening day of the Campbell/Cartier Classic at San Diego.

In the first game, Hawai'i lost to Oregon, 5-2. Melissa Coogan gave up four runs in five innings and was charged with the loss.

Tracie Uchima scored Hawai'i's first run in the first inning on April Crowell's sacrifice bunt.

Denise Dahlberg scored the second run in the fifth inning on a passed ball.

In the second game, Hawai'i beat Ohio, 3-1, as Shannon Tabion tossed a complete game, limiting the Bobcats to five hits.

Uchima and Tyleen Tausaga both hit solo home runs in the third and fourth innings, respectively, for the Rainbow Wahine.

Hawai'i is 6-9 overall. The Rainbow Wahine will play Loyola (Chicago) and San Diego State today.

Surfing

Sullivan leads way: Hawai'i's Pancho Sullivan scored the top two rides, riding backside (his back to the wave) to move into first place after yesterday's second round of the $75,000 Hansen's Energy Pro at Pipeline on O'ahu's North Shore.

Sullivans earned scores of 9.17 and 8.17 for a 17.34 total in 8-to-15 foot surf.

Sullivan, who won two pro surfing events on the North Shore this past winter, was directly seeded into round two.

"I've been setting my goals higher this year," Sullivan said. "I've got renewed focus. I just got married in October and I've got a baby on the way. It all made me want to reestablish myself as a quality North Shore surfer."

Also advancing with Sullivan into the third round is Japan's Takayuki Wakita with a total of 14.57.

In another heat Hawai'i's Marcus Hickman advanced with a score of 16.44, followed by Australia's Shaun Cansdell, who scored 15.
