FUN HOUSE
Change in skin tone perplexes 6-year-old

At dinner, we talked about what happened at Cub Scout camp the past weekend. My 6-year-old son, Matthew, was so happy and smiling but looked a bit puzzled. Pointing at his arm he said, "I'm white now, like you, Mom. Dad is dark. But I used to be dark."

I wanted to explain to Matt that he had gotten a dark suntan like Dad last summer, but he hadn't been in the sun much with all of the rain we'd been having. But my snickering 10-year-old son, Kendell, jumped in and said, "That's because you just discovered soap!"
