UH splits two at softball tourney

The University of Hawai'i softball team scored seven runs in the second inning en route to a 9-3 victory over Loyola-Chicago on the second day of the Campbell/Cartier Classic at San Diego.

In another game yesterday, San Diego State defeated the Rainbow Wahine, 8-4.

The Rainbow Wahine are 7-10 overall and 2-2 in the tournament.

In the victory over Loyola Chicago, Ashley Ruff had a lead-off homer, Stacey Ritter hit a two-run homer and April Crowell hit a two-run double in the second inning. Crowell finished 3 for 4, including two runs scored and three RBIs. Noelle Izumi also had three hits and scored two runs for the Rainbow Wahine. Shannon Tabion pitched a six-hitter for the victory, walking one and striking out five.

In the loss to the host Aztecs, Tracie Uchima, Tyleen Tausaga and Ritter paired hits. Ritter had a two-run single in a three-run sixth for UH.



MORE SOFTBALL

Hilo sweeps: Hilo rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Chaminade, 5-3, and sweep a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Hilo yesterday.

Sara Steele pitched a three-hit shutout and Kayla Kahuli hit a two-run homer in the Vulcans' 5-0 victory in the first game.

UH-Hilo is 10-3 overall and 6-0 in the PacWest. Chaminade is 4-8 and 4-2.

After Chaminade took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game, the Vulcans tied the game with a three-run fourth inning. The Vulcans added two runs in the fifth on an RBI grounder by Jennifer McCorkhill and an RBI single by Nancy Vega.

HPU, BYUH split: Brandy Choy Foo hit a two-run homer in the top of the 13th inning to lift Hawai'i Pacific to a 5-3 victory over Brigham Young-Hawai'i in the first game of a doubleheader at La'ie.

Brooke Hilton pitched a five-hitter, striking out four, to lead the Seasiders to a 2-1 victory in the second game.

HPU is 7-1 overall 1-1 in the PacWest. BYUH is 7-6 and 1-1.



SURFING

• 12 Isle surfers in quarterfinals: Twelve Hawai'i surfers advanced to the quarterfinals of the Hansen's Energy Pro at Pipeline on O'ahu's North Shore yesterday. The contest was held in 8- to 15-foot surf.

Hawai'i's Fred Patacchia had the highest score of the day with 17.5 points out of 20, and advanced out of his heat.

With waves forecast to be 10 to 12 feet today, the final day of the contest is expected to be held starting at 8 a.m.

Earlier in the day, South Africa's Daniel Redman, 19, sustained head injuries when he hit a reef in the first heat and was medivaced to The Queen's Medical Center.

Meet officials said teammate Richard Sills went to the hospital with Redman and said Redman suffered a broken left eardrum, received stitches above his left eye, a gash above his right ear, and had some back pain.

Heat 4: Eric Rebiere (France), Shaun Cansdell (Australia), Derek Ho (Hawai'i), Makua Rothman (Hawai'i).



MEETING

Iolani's Mugiishi at QB Club: Iolani boys basketball coach Mark Mugiishi, University of Hawai'i tennis coach John Nelson and Chris Dey, general manager of the Hawaiian Islanders arena football team, are the scheduled speakers for tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club.

The club luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Ballroom.
