Two-bit tidbits of the states

Gannett News Service

The U.S. Mint has issued commemorative quarters for more than half of the 50 states. Vermont's version may appeal especially to pancake lovers.

The Mississippi quarter is one of the 26 released so far. A bit of state trivia: It may not have a reputation for snow, but Mississippi is where Flexible Flyer sleds are manufactured.

Are you collecting the state quarters? If you are, your quest for all 50 quarters is halfway over — the 25th quarter (Arkansas) was issued in November. (No. 26, Michigan, was issued in January.)

But how much do you know about the 25 states whose quarters you have tucked away in one of those map posters or in a jar? Can you match the facts below with the state quarter they describe? The quarters themselves offer clues to some (but not all) of the questions.

1. Four U.S. presidents were born here, including a father-and-son team.

2. You probably got this quarter first.

3. We're not fuzzy on this: The peach is the state's official fruit.

4. Flexible Flyer sleds are made in this commonly misspelled state.

5. This state has the most miles of interstate highway per square mile, and that's not counting the "500" track.

6. This is the pelican — not the "red stick" — state.

7. Pancake lovers probably like this state best.

8. The biggest state for lobsters and blueberries.

9. Harry Truman liked to play a waltz in this state.

10. This was the 16th state admitted to the union, not the 10th.

11. Home to the Pro Football and Rock and Roll halls of fame.

12. This state may be the Land of Lincoln, but Abraham Lincoln wasn't born here.

13. This is the state where Lincoln was born.

14. Harper Lee, Helen Keller and Condoleezza Rice were born here.

15. The "people rule" in this state, not the Hot Springs.

16. Susan B. Anthony is from here, but a different "lady" appears on the back of this quarter.

17. This state recently lost its Old Man.

18. State where the Civil War began.

19. P.T. Barnum, Noah Webster and Harriet Beecher Stowe were born here.

20. This state opened the nation's first zoo, in 1874.

21. A city in this state has a "monopoly" on street names.

22. This smallest state in size hosted the first circus in the United States, in 1774.

23. A not-so-high-flying state.

24. Home to the world's largest office building.

25. This state's motto is "manly deeds, womanly words."
