THE LEFT LANE
Mardi Gras galore

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Who needs Bourbon Street when you've got Nu'uanu Avenue? OK, so the celebration may not be as wild, but loads of merriment will be offered at the 4th annual Nu'uanu Mardi Gras Block Party, 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. tomorrow on Nu'uanu Avenue, between Pauahi and King streets.

There will be two stages of music, by H20 and Aloha Brasil, and New Orleans cuisine by Hanks Cafe Honolulu, Indigo Eurasian Cuisine, Tea at 1024 and others.

Also, check out the retail booths, art displays of locally designed masks, costume contest, palm-reading and games. Just look for the Mardi Gras flags for the participating merchants.

And don't feel bad if you party extravagantly — 10 percent of the proceeds from scrip sales for drinks will be donated to The ARTS at Marks Garage Community Program. For details: www.indigo-hawaii.com.

Retail nightmare

It's happened to all of us: We walk into a store with our wallet burning a hole in our pocket. We're poised to shop till we drop. The sales woman is sitting behind the register, cracking gum and talking on a cell phone.

Does she bother to look up when we try to signal her to ask if they have our size? No way. That call is clearly more important than our cold, hard cash.

Tell us all about your worst retail experiences. You don't have to mention names. But do tell us what happened. write to Paula Rath at prath@honoluluadvertiser.com.
