Hawai'i-Hilo softball sweeps Chaminade

Advertiser Staff

Kayla Kahuli batted 4 for 6, including a solo homer, to propel host Hawai'i-Hilo to a sweep of Chaminade yesterday.

The Vulcans won the Pacific West Conference doubleheader, 3-1 and 1-0.

Hilo improved to 12-3 overall and 8-0 in the PacWest. Chaminade is 4-10 and 4-4.

Kahuli's fourth-inning homer over the left-field fence gave Hilo a 1-0 lead in the opener. Jennifer McCorkhill added a two-run pinch-hit single in the sixth to support Sarah Steele (5-2), who pitched a three-hitter with two strikeouts.

Laura Kimborowicz, who had two hits in the opener, hit a first-inning sacrifice fly for the only run in the second game. Kahuli doubled to move Lisa Jackson into scoring position.

Miki Asamura (3-0) pitched a six-hitter with four strikeouts.

• Rainbow Wahine finish 2-2: The University of Hawai'i finished with a 2-2 record at the Campbell/Cartier Classic, which saw its final round of competition canceled yesterday because of unplayable conditions following a night of heavy rains.

Cal State Northridge (4-0) finished with the best record in the 12-team field.

TRACK AND FIELD

• Smith shines at Sunrise: University of Hawai'i junior Kelsey Smith threw the javelin 37.48 meters, the sixth-best distance in school history, in the third Sunrise Meet Saturday at Cooke Field.

Other notable performances by Rainbow Wahine athletes included Dana Buchanan's 1,000-meter time of 2 minutes, 55.78 seconds; Kelly Young's 300-meter hurdles time of 44.50; and Novelle Murray's 20-pound weight throw of 15.58 meters.

The 14-member UH squad will compete in the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track Championships, Thursday through Saturday, at Boise State. The Rainbow Wahine finished ninth in last year's meet.

"With two indoor opportunities, they're definitely going to be more prepared," said UH coach Carmyn James. "Last year, we just sent six athletes directly to the WAC, and the six we sent didn't get to compete in any other meets. Now, we experienced the facility and know what to expect this year."
