Barbie puts Polynesia in its kiddie clothes

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Barbie clothes are going Hawaiian. But we're not talking about clothes that fit the doll. We're talking clothes that fit the girl.

The spring/summer 2004 Barbie apparel collection for girls sizes 4-6x includes something called Tiki Tech, featuring prints with a Polynesian flair. The collection includes purses, sunglasses, surf shorts, T-shirts, skirts, sandals and bathing suits. You can "Shop with Barbie" at www.barbie.com.

How may I not help you, ma'am?

Talking on the cell phone. Chatting with a girlfriend. Ignoring you while hiding out behind the cash register. We've all had it happen: poor service in a retail setting.

Tell us about your worst shopping experience, and feel free to add what you expect in a good retail encounter. Write Paula Rath at prath@honoluluadvertiser.com.

Baby-gift registries have settled online

Three out of four moms having their first baby now register for gifts online, according to research from American Baby magazine. The magazine says the number of moms who register online has doubled since 1996.

Baby linens and clothes top the wish lists. Most also include bottles, nursery monitors, toys, baby toiletries, car seats, strollers, odorless diaper pails and diapers.

The research, by David Burnett & Associates, indicates moms receive an average of $800 worth in gifts from their baby registry (with first-time moms averaging more — $900 vs. $600 for moms with other children).
