Joey DeSa baseball tournament on tap

In a rematch of last year's state high school baseball championship, Kamehameha will play Kailua in one opener of the 17th annual Joey DeSa Memorial tournament.

The eight-team tournament, sponsored by Damien Memorial High, runs Thursday through Saturday at various sites.

The defending state champion Warriors will travel to Kailua to play the runner-up Surfriders at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Kamehameha beat Kailua, 4-2, in last year's state title game, which was held on Maui.

In other opening-round games, host Damien will play Moloka'i at Joey DeSa Field, Roosevelt will visit Mid-Pacific Institute and Wai'anae will travel to Moanalua. All games are at 3:30 p.m.

Kitamura Tournament: The 24th annual Mid-Pacific Insti-tute/Richard Kitamura high school baseball tournament is scheduled for March 3 to 7.

The 16-team tournament, divided into two pools, opens with four games each on March 3 and March 4. The pool championships are on March 6 and the championship is at 3 p.m. March 7 at Mid-Pacific field.

Opening round schedule:

  • March 3 (all games at 3:45 p.m.): Kamehameha at 'Aiea; Leilehua vs. Kalani at Kahala Field; Punahou vs. Waimea at Mid-Pacific; Mililani at Kaiser.
  • March 4 (all games at 3:45 p.m.): Marin Catholic at Mid-Pacific; Kauai at Moanalua; North Monterey at Iolani; Saint Louis at Roosevelt.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Punahou leads Lady Tiger field: Defending champion Punahou and runner-up Kahuku are in the field for the 14th annual Lady Tiger Challenge high school basketball tournament, which starts on Thursday at McKinley High Student Council Gymnasium.

In opening-day games, Punahou faces Lahainaluna at 4 p.m., Kamehameha plays Kealakehe at 5:30 p.m., Kahuku takes on Baldwin at 7 p.m. and McKinley hosts Waiakea at 8:30 p.m.

The tournament continues with games starting at 4 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

UH-Hilo's Griffin honored: Hawai'i-Hilo basketball guard Justin Griffin earned Pacific West Conference Player of the Week honors for helping the Vulcans win three games last week.

The 6-foot-4 junior averaged just under 20 points a game for the week, including a season-high 27 points on Saturday to help UH-Hilo come back from a 13-point halftime deficit against Montana State-Billings.

He has scored in double figures in the Vulcans' last five games, averaging 17.6 points per game over that stretch.

He ranks 14th in the PacWest in scoring (12.5), sixth in free-throw percentage (82.2), 14th in 3-point percentage (34.3) and 10th in blocked shots (0.64).
