Sailor charged in drug probe

A sailor stationed at Pearl Harbor has been charged in connection with a three-year Navy drug investigation into the alleged sale and use of Ecstasy, LSD, cocaine, methamphetamines and marijuana.

Chief Petty Officer 1st Class Jeffrey Wright, a machinist mate, has been charged and reassigned from the nuclear submarine USS Los Angeles to shore duty pending an Article 32 hearing, said Pacific Submarine Forces spokeswoman Cmdr. Kelly Merrell.

An Article 32 hearing is equivalent to a civilian grand- jury proceeding and is the first step toward a general court-martial.

Wright is among 18 sailors on 10 nuclear vessels based from Connecticut to Hawai'i charged in the three-year probe. The alleged drug offenses Wright is accused of occurred while he was stationed in Connecticut.

A total of nine sailors have been court-martialed with prison sentences of up to 30 months in prison and forfeiture of up to $3,000 in pay. Four other sailors have been either kicked out of the Navy or will be shortly. Three more sailors are awaiting court-martials and two, including Wright, are facing pre-trial hearings.

The woman allegedly kicked one officer and bit the finger of another officer.

She was booked at 9:30 p.m. on two counts of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and second-degree terroristic threatening.
