Kaimuki edges Waimea

By Brandon Masuoka
Advertiser Staff Writer

In desperate need of a rescue, Kaimuki turned to Jimmy Miyasaka to save the team last night.

Miyasaka stung Waimea with two critical baskets in the fourth quarter of a 48-46 victory in the first round of the HHSAA/Hawaiian Airlines Boys State Basketball Championship Tournament at Blaisdell Arena.

Miyasaka's first key basket gave Kaimuki a 42-41 lead, and his second bucket pushed the Bulldogs ahead 44-43 with a little more than a minute remaining.

"The ending of the game, I knew Kaimuki was going to Miyasaka," Waimea coach Matt Taba said. "The kid is an all-state player. It's tough to stop him. Not too many people can."

Kaimuki (12-4) will play two-time defending state champion Iolani tonight at 7:30.

Kauai Interscholastic Federation champion Waimea (8-1) rallied from a 10-point third-quarter deficit and took fourth-quarter leads of 41-40 and 43-42 behind consecutive baskets by Jordon Dizon.

"It was very intense," Dizon said. "Someone had to take the lead. I just threw up a couple of shots and they happened to go in."

Miyasaka finished with a team-high 17 points with eight rebounds and five steals. Teammate Tony Fa'asoa added 10 points.

Waimea's Jeremy Manuel scored 18 points and Dizon added 15 despite playing the entire fourth quarter with four fouls.

"The good players are going to step up at the end," Kaimuki coach Stephen Lee said. "Dizon stepped up for them. He made some key shots. Jimmy came through for us this game. I'm really happy for that."

After falling behind 38-28 in the third quarter, Waimea engineered a 13-2 run, capped by Dizon's bucket, to take a 41-40 lead.

Miyasaka and Dizon traded baskets before Miyasaka hit the go-ahead shot for a 44-43 lead with 1:08 remaining.

Kaimuki, the Oahu Interscholastic Association's third-place team, sank 4 of 4 free throws in the final 34.4 seconds to seal the victory.

Miyasaka credited his teammates for getting him on track in the fourth quarter. He said Waimea gave Kaimuki all it could handle.

"Waimea's a solid team," Miyasaka said. "They beat us last year. The time was now. We don't have a tomorrow. We play as a team and we win."

Kaimuki held a big advantage at the free-throw line. The Bulldogs made 14 of 16 from the line, while Waimea shot 7 of 13.

"I would have liked for us to shoot a little better free throws," Taba said. "Kaimuki's a great team, and for us to play with them on such a big stage tonight, it shows what kind of kids we got on the team this year."
