Party on with Oscar and fellow film fans

Get the black ties and cameras ready when the Hawaii International Film Festival hosts the Honolulu edition of the 46 official Oscar Night America parties that will be held across the country Sunday. The viewing party and celebration start at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Meritage Restaurant in Restaurant Row, with the telecast available on multiple screens.

Tickets are $100 general or $75 for HIFF Ohana members and Meritage customers. The ticket price includes valet parking, red-carpet welcome, champagne reception, dinner buffet and live broadcast of the 76th annual Academy Awards. ARTafterDARK begins with Kung Fu Friday

"Master of the Flying Guillotine" is the featured film at the Doris Duke Theatre at tonight's Kung Fu Friday event at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Everybody, it's Kung Fu Friday! At the Honolulu Academy of Arts, that is, as the museum kicks off a new monthly program, ARTafterDARK, tonight. From 5 to 9 p.m., the event offers pau hana fun with art, food and entertainment. Explore the academy's permanent galleries and international traveling exhibitions. You can take a guided gallery walk via Zip-Tours or take part in short discussions on art and cultural topics during Zip-Talks. Celebrate this month's theme by viewing kung fu clips or a screening of "Master of the Flying Guillotine" in the Doris Duke Theatre. Or enjoy drink or pupu specials at the Pavilion Café; reservations can be made at 532-8734.

ARTafterDARK continues on the last Friday of each month. Upcoming themes include Night at the Oscars March 26, French Café April 30, Tiki Time May 28, Fellini Friday June 25 and Young Collectors Night July 30.

The blues go for a cruise Saturday

The next KIPO Blues Cruise is on for Saturday aboard the Navatek I. Presented by Hawai'i Public Radio, Atlantis and the Kona Brewing Co., this month's blues night features Jeff Said No! opening up the night at 8:30 p.m., followed by Bluzilla with Keahi Conjugacion, right, at 9:30. Cajun-style food and drinks will be available for purchase.

A pre-cruise party and advance check-in takes place at Hooter's from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. Check-in at Pier 6 is 7:45-8 p.m., followed by boarding of the Navatek I at 8. The cruise takes off at 8:20 p.m. and returns to the dock at 10:20 p.m. Music and dancing continue through until 11:30 p.m.

Advance tickets are $30 general and $28 for HPR members. On-site tickets purchased on the day of the cruise are $35 general and $33 HPR members. Reservations: 973-1311.


Symphony cellist performs at Atherton

Honolulu Symphony cellist Susie Lee makes her debut at the Atherton Performing Arts Studio Saturday. Accompanying her will be Thomas Yee on piano. The evening's program includes works by Beethoven, George Crumb, Arvo Part and Brahms.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $17.50 general, $15 Hawai'i Public Radio members and $10 students. Reservations: 955-8821.


Films and food at Sunset on the Beach

Jim Carrey, right, stars as a disgruntled mortal who is granted godly powers in the comedy "Bruce Almighty," screening Saturday night at Sunset on the Beach. The weekend festival of food booths, entertainment and films on a 30-foot screen at Queen's Surf Beach in Waikiki continues Sunday with Kevin Costner's western drama "Open Range." The events begin each afternoon at 4 p.m. Admission is free. 523-2489.


Jazzed at Kapono's

California's Rod Harris Jazz Quintet, showcasing everything from swing to standards to Latin to original arrangements of classic jazz tunes, performs at 8 p.m. Sunday at Kapono's in Aloha Tower Marketplace. The group, with drummer David Hawkes, bassist Clinton Day, guitarist Joel Nixon, keyboardist LeRoy Garner and tenor saxophonist Rod Harris, has performed at jazz festivals throughout California. Admission is free for 21 and older, although children 12 and younger are allowed when accompanied by a parent. 536-2161.


A concert from the 'Heart'

"Follow Your Heart Every Day" is the theme of a concert by Philippines stars Sunday in the Hawai'i Convention Center ballroom.

Carol Banawa, aka the Voice, will perform R&B and pop songs in Filipino and English, including hits from her newest album, "Carol — Follow Your Heart." The singer, recording artist, and TV personality has been a favorite in the Philippines since her show-biz debut 10 years ago.

The evening opens with the award-winning Renz Verano, or The Jukebox King, belting out rock ballads. Jeannette Trevias serves as music director.
