EAST HONOLULU

School to be in compliance

The state will spend more than $1 million at Kalani High School to ensure the school meets accessibility guidelines consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The work will include adding walkways, ramps, parking stalls, an elevator and making other changes to the inside of classrooms. The school was built in 1958, before the guidelines were enacted.

The work will begin in October 2005 and take nearly a year.

Workshop on going to college

A free workshop on college admissions and financial aid will be held Thursday at Kalani High School.

The event is sponsored by the Hawai'i Association for College Admissions Counseling, in conjunction with First Hawaiian Bank.

$10,000 grant to Papakolea

The Papakolea Community Development Corp. has received a $10,000 grant from the Friends of Weinberg to furnish a new community technology center at Papakolea Community Park.

The grant was provided through the Honolulu Sunrise Rotary Club, which was allowed to choose an organization for the award after participating in a community service project.

Parking is topic of meeting

The final Kaimuki parking solution coalition meeting will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in the Lili'uokalani Elementary School cafeteria.

Urban Works was contracted by the city to develop both short- and long-term plans to alleviate parking problems in the busy shopping area, and the company will present its finding at the meeting.

The master plan is financed by $75,000 in city vision money.

There will be an informal meeting of the community after the presentation to discuss the suggestions and develop the next steps to bring a plan to completion.

Parking is available in the Mahina Street school lot. For more information, call 737-7487.
