UH swimming teams in second

The University of Hawai'i men's and women's swimming and diving teams were in second place yesterday at their respective meets.

Hawai'i's Andrew Affleck and Cheyne Bloch broke their own school records on the second day of the National Independent Conference Championships at Rochester, Mich.

Affleck swam the 500-yard freestyle in 4 minutes, 21.36 seconds, while Bloch finished the 200 individual medley in 1:46.37.

SMU leads the five-team meet with 326 points. Hawai'i has 292 and Denver is third with 159.

The Rainbow Wahine won three races yesterday on the second day of the Western Athletic Conference Championships in San Antonio.

UH's Nicole Mackey won the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.08), Dena Quick captured the 50 freestyle (22.72) and QiongJie Huang won the one-meter diving event (283.05).

The Rainbow Wahine trail SMU, 334-258.



BASKETBALL

• Hilo upsets BYUH: Ryan Abrahams scored 30 points and Justin Griffin added 19 as Hawai'i-Hilo upset No. 20 Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 84-72, in a Pacific West Conference game last night at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.

Joe Travis had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds for Hilo (16-8, 8-6), which shot 57.1 percent from the field.

Jake Chrisman scored 30 points for BYUH (20-5, 10-3), which clinched the PacWest title Tuesday.



BASEBALL

• Vulcans lose to UCLA: The University of Hawai'i-Hilo baseball team yesterday dropped its series opener against UCLA, 10-4, at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

Hector Ambriz pitched six innings to earn the win for the Bruins (6-3). He gave up four runs on five hits before being relieved by Adam Simon.

UCLA's Wes Whisler went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.

Hilo dropped to 4-15.



WATER POLO

• Rainbow Wahine lose at San Diego State: The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team dropped a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match yesterday at San Diego State, 11-10, in overtime.

Beth Novick had four goals for the Rainbow Wahine and Kristy Bagnall and Shannon Carroll each added a pair of goals.

Hawai'i fell to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the MPSF. The Aztecs are 9-1, 2-0. The Rainbows take on No. 16 Arizona today.



SPEED CLINIC

• Clinic today at UH: University of Hawai'i football coaches Rich Miano and Mel deLaura will conduct another pair of Speed and Quickness Clinics today and Sunday at Cooke Field.

Registration is at 10 a.m. for ages 7-13 and 1:30 p.m. for participants 13 and older. A fee of $10 will be charged.

Ex-Campbell player traded: The Los Angeles Avengers acquired defensive specialist Jeroid Johnson from the Las Vegas Gladiators yesterday in a three-team Arena Football League trade that also involved the Philadelphia Soul.

The Avengers sent lineman Mike Ulufale, a Campbell High and BYU alum, to Philadelphia, and Las Vegas obtained kicker Brian Gowins from the Soul.
