Spiritual music at Chaminade

The Hawaii Vocal Arts Ensemble will present "Sacred Sounds III," spiritual music with Renaissance and Romantic motets and contemporary classics, at 7:30 p.m. March 6 and 4 p.m. March 7 in the Mystical Rose Oratory on the campus of Chaminade University, 3140 Wai'alae Ave.

The concert will feature Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" transcribed for voices, and sacred choral music by Byrd, Beethoven, Brahms, Villa-Lobos, Fauré, Poulenc and Aaron Copland. Guest vocalist is Charlottémarie performing the Lord's Prayer in Aramaic.

Tickets: $17.50 to $35 ($12.50 seniors and military, $5 for students).

Jesuit to speak at UH-Manoa

Catholic Campus Ministry at the University of Hawai'iiManoa, kicks off its free four-part spring speaker series with a two-hour lecture, the Rev. Tom Weston's "Putting Faith Into Practice," at 7 p.m. March 10 at the Campus Center, Hemenway Hall.

Weston, a Jesuit priest, is a nationally renowned speaker on 12-step and faith-based self-help programs. He'll discuss empowering choices and actions in daily life. Other topics in the series include: "Discerning Right Action Through Prayer," by the Rev. Chris Cartwright (March 31); "Finding My Real Purpose in Life," by John Havey (April 14); and "Can Scientific Knowledge Be Consistent with Faith," by the Rev. Don Merrifield (April 28).

Bach performed by church group

The Lutheran Church of Honolulu Choir and Bach Chamber Orchestra will give two historically informed performances of Bach's "St. John Passion" at 7:30 p.m. March 12-13.

Carl Crosier will conduct an international cast of performers, including Max van Egmond, Jennifer Lane and David Newman.

Holland's van Egmond, a well-known interpreter of J. S. Bach's cantatas, masses and passions who has received numerous awards and honors (including a special decoration from Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands for his decades of service to Dutch musical life), will sing the part of Jesus. Mezzo-soprano Lane has appeared at festivals worldwide, and American baritone Newman is known for his work in opera, oratorio and chamber music.

Local soloists include Georgine Stark, soprano; Les Ceballos, tenor; Joseph Z. Pettit, tenor; and Leon Williams, baritone.
