UH men, women second in swimming

University of Hawai'i swimmers set five school men's records and two swimmers earned NCAA qualifying times during the third day of the National Independent Conference Championships at Oakland University Aquatics Complex in Rochester, Mich.

Southern Methodist leads the meet with 617 points, followed by UH with 589 and Oakland with 328. The meet ends today.

Swimmers setting UH records yesterday were:

  • Peter Thew in winning the 200 freestyle in 1:35.90, an NCAA Championship meet automatic qualifying time. Thew also broke his own record in winning the 100 backstroke in 47.51.
  • Cheyne Bloch in winning the 100 breaststroke in 53.76, an NCAA automatic qualifying time.
  • Andrew Affleck in the 400-yard individual medley in 3 minutes, 50.12 seconds.
  • Thew, Bloch, Nimrod Palma and Boehm in the 400 medley relay in 3:13.88.
  • UH women second: Swimmers Yan Chen and Nicole Mackey and diver Qiongjie Huang each won their second event at the Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championship at San Antonio.

SMU leads the meet with 625 points, followed by Hawai'i with 484 and Nevada with 423. The meet ends today.

Chen won the 400 individual medley in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 4:15.64.

Mackey won the 100 backstroke in 54.58.

Huang captured the 3-meter diving with 507.60 points. UH's Maggie Roberts was second (484.45). Both are NCAA automatic qualifiers.

WATER POLO

UH stops Arizona State: Malia Tarayao and Kristy Bagnall scored in the fourth period to give Hawai'i a 4-3 victory over Arizona State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Tempe, Ariz.

Tenth-ranked UH is 5-5 overall and 2-3 in the MPSF. ASU was playing in its first match as a member of the MPSF.

Tarayao and Bagnall gave UH a 4-2 lead in the fourth period. With time running out, ASU's Gili Kollan goal ended the scoring.

Darcy Scott-Hosaka scored in the second period and Bagnall scored in the third period for UH.

UH goalie Leanna Hahn posted a season-high 11 saves.

BASEBALL

UCLA routs Hilo: Outfielder Matt Thayer hit for the cycle, had five RBIs and scored three runs as UCLA defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 14-1, at Francis Wong Stadium in Hilo yesterday.

UCLA is 7-3, UH-Hilo 4-16. The game was called after seven innings using the 10-run rule.

Thayer had a double in the first inning, a three-run triple in the second, a two-run homer in the fourth and a lead-off single in the seventh.

UCLA's Casey Janssen pitched six innings, allowed two hits, struck out eight and walked none for the victory.

RUNNING

Perimeter relay today: The O'ahu Perimeter Relay, with 125 seven-member teams, will begin today and continue through tomorrow.

The race, which has 22 legs, will start at Kapi'olani Park at 6 p.m. It will also end at the park.

Competitors will be running along the roads and highways around the island.

The first teams are expected to finish early in afternoon tomorrow.
