Hawai'i splits two games with USF

Hawai'i's pitching went to the extremes in a doubleheader split against San Francisco last night at Les Murakami Stadium.

RICKY BAUER

Ricky Bauer pitched a six-hitter in a 5-0 win in the opener to extend the Rainbows' win streak to eight, only to see Stephen Bryant last 1¡ innings in the nightcap in a 14-1 loss.

The Rainbows (9-6) will try to get back on the winning track in a 1:05 p.m. start today in the rubber game of the series against the Dons (4-7). Clary Carlsen will start for UH against USF's T.J. Franco.

The doubleheader was necessitated by Friday's rain postponement . Yesterday's start ended up being delayed an hour for ground maintenance as rain earlier in the morning left the dirt areas drenched, despite being covered by tarps. A crowd of 1,109 watched the games.

The Dons did their damage in the first four innings against Bryant (1-1), who gave up six runs, three earned, Steven Wright (three runs in 1á innings) and Kaimi Mead (five runs, four earned in two-thirds of an inning).

"It's a simple thing when you have a four-inning imploding like that," UH coach Mike Trapasso said. "All you have to do is look at how those guys threw in those first four innings and where they were throwing. As I told those guys, every single guy was throwing fastball up. They couldn't get the fastball down, couldn't get a secondary pitch over for a strike. Period. It's that simple."

Chuck Withers restored order pitching one-hit ball in 4¡ scoreless innings. Keahi Rawlins, penned in as Tuesday's starter against Chicago State in the opener of the Rainbow Tournament, pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two.

Derek Tate (1-1) pitched two-hit ball over six innings with six strikeouts for USF. Armand Gaerlan led USF's 13-hit assault by batting 4 for 4 with six RBIs.

But it was Mililani High graduate Cy Donald who ignited the Dons' five-run first inning with a lead-off double. The junior went 0 for 4 as the designated hitter in the opener, but went 2 for 5 with three runs in the second game.

"I've been waiting for this since high school," said Donald, who added that USF was the only school that offered him to walk-on. "I've always wanted to play back here in Hawai'i."

The Dons sent their entire lineup to the plate in the first in which four of the runs were unearned because of a throwing error by third baseman Creighton Kahoali'i. The Dons batted around in a five-run fourth, highlighted by a two-run double by Gaerlan.

With the starting rotation still not set after Bauer, the Rainbows will look to this week's tournament for someone to emerge.

"We're looking for somebody to step up," Trapasso said. "I don't think you can put a lot of question marks on Stephen Bryant because he's just been stellar every time he's been out, whether it's starting or relief. This is his first bad outing he's had for us all year."

In the first game, Bauer (4-1) gave up a walk in the ninth and had four strikeouts. He was backed by two double plays, including one to end the game. In one stretch, he retired 12 in a row before Nick Cirbo's two out, seventh-inning double.

It was the team's second shutout of the season, but first in a complete-game fashion.

The Rainbows got to USF starter Kevin Rose (1-2) in the second inning. Kahoali'i led off by getting hit by a pitch. Andrew Sansaver reached first when first baseman Chris Genung dropped a throw from third baseman Andrew Smith on a sacrifice that put runners at first and second. Nate Thurber doubled in Kahoali'i that sent Sansaver to third. Sansaver scored on Greg Kish's sacrifice fly to right to make it 2-0.
