Lingle announces two pardons

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle yesterday announced that she earlier pardoned two individuals who she said had served their debt to society.

The pardons were the first time Lingle has exercised the gubernatorial pardon power.

George D. Makaneole III of Kaua'i and Shaff M. Kina of Maui were pardoned in November and October, respectively.

Makaneole was convicted in October 1978 of third-degree assault, his sole conviction. Makaneole was pardoned Nov. 17.

Kina was convicted of harassment in 1979, harassment and disorderly conduct in 1981, driving under the influence in 1983 and 1985, and first-degree terroristic threatening and third-degree criminal property damage in 1983.

Kina successfully completed his probation in 1988 and has had no arrests or convictions since 1985.
