Oscar hustle is hitting air waves

By R. Kinsey Lowe
Los Angeles Times

For those of you a little puzzled by what seems to be an abundance of movie advertising on television and in national newspapers, one reason is that award season has shifted into overdrive with this week's mailing of Oscar nomination ballots to the 5,803 voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

With Oscar nomination ballots in the mail and final ballots for the Golden Globes scheduled to be sent out Monday, marketers clearly think more frequent and larger ads will also penetrate the consciousness of members of the academy and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, not to mention the Screen Actors Guild and the directors' and writers' guilds.

As the pace accelerates, Directors Guild nominations for feature films will be announced Tuesday, followed by SAG nominations Jan. 15 and Writers Guild movie nominations Jan. 22.

The Golden Globes will be presented Jan. 25; Oscar nominations will be announced two days later.

The DGA awards are scheduled Feb. 7, the Writers Guild awards on Feb. 21 and the SAG awards on Feb. 22, with the Oscars capping things off Feb. 29.
