Trailer to help in fire training

The Honolulu Fire Department has been awarded $748,979 under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

HFD plans to use the money to buy a Fireflash trailer, a mobile, propane-fired, two-story trailer that will allow the department to train firefighters in structural fire settings.

Hiram Lane fire may be arson

Fire investigators suspect arson in a fire at an abandoned house on Hiram Lane yesterday afternoon. The fire caused $500 damage to an exterior storage shed, police said. The fire was reported at 2:16 p.m. and extinguished by firefighters from the Kuakini station. No injuries were reported and there was no other damage.

Beach events get washed out

City officials yesterday canceled both of this weekend's "Sunset on the Beach" festivities on Waikiki Beach because of forecasts of rain.

Norwegian Cruise Line, sponsor of musical entertainment and movies originally set for tomorrow and Sunday, rescheduled the events for Jan. 24 and 25.

Stolen car, cards recovered

Police have recovered a car and credit cards stolen in a recent burglary.

It happened at a drunken- driving checkpoint Tuesday morning at Palamea and Olomea streets in Kalihi. Three men and a woman were arrested by police, who stopped their car at 12:10 a.m.

Police arrested an 'Ewa Beach man, 29, on suspicion of auto theft; a man, 26, from 'Ewa for alleged possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia; and a Waipahu man, 29, for allegedly possessing stolen credit cards.

Anthropologist to give free talk

Marion Kelly, an anthropologist at the University of Hawai'i and the Bishop Museum, will discuss the ahu-pua'a, the Hawaiian land division that stretches from mountain to sea, at 7 p.m. Monday at the Mo'ili'ili Community Center, 2535 S. King St.

The free talk is sponsored by the Ala Wai Watershed Association, and native plants will be given away at the event. For more information, call Karen Ah Mai at 955-7882.

Big Isle station out for repairs

Public radio listeners on the Big Island won't be able to tune in to KANO until the middle of next week.

KANO's transmitter went off the air Tuesday when a piece of equipment failed, Hawai'i Public Radio said yesterday.

Robert Leembruggen, Hawai'i Public Radio's chief engineer, diagnosed the problem Wednesday when he reached the transmitter near Mountain View.

Assistant General Manager Valerie Yee said a replacement part is expected soon.
